Three Laws of Robotics

It turns out there are laws governing just about everything. Here is the accepted ‘Three Laws of Robotics‘, otherwise known as Asimov’s laws.

  • First Law – A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  • Second Law – A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  • Third Law – A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

So far, so good.

Copper Rivet Day

Happy Copper Rivet Day! It was one hundred forty-seven years ago on May 20, 1873, that the copper rivet was patented. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis collaborated to bring about the manufacture and implementation of what is an indispensable and iconic feature found on every pair of denim jeans. The copper rivet has been a fascinating part of everyday life, and is barely noticed and often under-appreciated. Actually, without the humble little rivet, we may not even have the denim jean as we know them today. Although Mr. Strauss designed and manufactured denim work pants, he found that at critical points of stress during use, the pants would rip and tear. He needed a solution to strengthen them, and this he found in the little rivet  invention of Jacob Davis. Like so many other things in life that go so well together, buttons and cards, Girl with Guitar, ink and paper, The Copper Rivet, will be forever united with the clothes we love to wear.

The Internet of Things

The internet of things. A promise, process, and plan to build an infrastructure of all things – appliances, services, tools, and toys with the ability to maintain themselves, update their internal operating system, and communicate among themselves to work as a harmonious collective. They actually ‘talk’ among themselves in a manner. This future is actively being rolled out incrementally and quietly, piece by piece, thing by thing. In fact, it’s somewhat difficult to visualize the fullness of the outcome. Surely someone is in charge of this effort? A master plan, a company devoted to producing a safe, useful service? Is someone overseeing this? I’m only asking questions, and don’t think anything could go wrong.

Could it?

Catfishin’

Well I wish I was a catfish
Swimming in the, the deep blue sea
I have ah, all you pretty women
Fishing after me
Sho nuff after me
Oh well
Oh well
Oh yeah

Primary Colors

It’s pretty amazing when you stop and think about the fact that all the colors we see around us are made up but from a very few. We won’t go into detail here regarding primary colors, color theory, or visible light spectrum, after all, that’s what art school is for.

We are thankful for the paints and pens and inks and brushes that let us draw from a few elements and unfold an idea into a multitude bouquet of form and color.
